We think it has to do with people being out more this year due to last year’s bans.
The National Security Council (NSC) estimates 482 people could die on US roads during the Independence Day holidays. Holidays are traditionally a travel time for families in the United States. Many choose road trips, which have the highest death rate of any major mode of transport, based on deaths per passenger mile. Holidays are also often the occasion for celebrations involving alcohol consumption, a leading cause of car accidents.

Independence Day is celebrated on July 4th. Independence Day holidays vary between 1.25 and 4.25 days, depending on which day of the week the holiday falls. In 2021, the public holiday falls on a Sunday, so the holiday on Independence Day is 3.25 days and extends from Friday, July 2, 6:00 p.m. to Monday, July 5, 11:59 p.m.
