Cutting off dogs’ ears – a painful procedure that involves surgically altering ears to make dogs look more intimidating or to follow a trend – has no welfare benefits. Described as “mutilation” and “barbaric” by animal welfare organizations, the RSPCA has reports on More than 600% increase in ear circumcision in the past six years.
Ear cutting is illegal under the Animal Welfare Act in England and Wales unless it is done for medical reasons. However, many Britons buy cut-off dogs from other countries where the procedure is legal and have them imported.
“Dogs should never be maimed for cosmetic purposes, and ear clipping can even be detrimental to their health, behavior and welfare,” RSPCA inspector Herchy Boal told the BBC. “We urge people never to buy a dog with their ears cut off and report any ear cutting concerns to the RSPCA.”

What Exactly Is Dog Ears Cropping?
Trimming or docking is the process of cutting off a dog’s earlobes in breeds such as mastiffs, Dobermans, and American bull dogs. Unfortunately, some people believe that in certain breeds, the ears should be surgically altered or even removed completely. Not only is it a painful process, but it also has no benefits and is completely unnecessary.
According to the RSPCA, clipped ears have been “glorified” due to an increase in celebrities who own clipped dogs. In fact, the charity found that shorn dogs are even used on clothing, as well as in advertising.
In May of that year, a man was jailed after admitting he paid £ 3,000 to someone he didn’t know to cut the ears of a litter of nine puppies. After an RSPCA inspector responded to a complaint from a citizen, he found the pups with red, crusty, unhealed ears.

“Ear cutting is a painful process that is done purely for cosmetic reasons and is often done to make a dog look more intimidating,” said Dr. Samantha Gaines, RSPCA expert on dog welfare. “However, it can have lifelong effects on the health and behavior of the dog.
“Dogs can suffer from infected wounds and chronic ear infections, while some can remain incredibly sensitive and head shy throughout their lives. Dogs use their ears to communicate with other dogs and people, and some docked dogs come into our care , have shown.” Behavioral problems caused by the inability to do this normally. “
In some good news, the government recently announced plans to ban imports of dogs with their ears cut off – a move welcomed by the RSPCA. If you want to make a difference, you can sign the petition to stop the rise in the number of shaven-ear dogs in the UK.
