NS. LOUIS – To help the aging cat population, Tiki Pets® recently launched a range of senior-specific wet cat food formulas designed for cats 11 years and older.
Tiki Cat Silver contains three protein-oriented wet food formulas for cats in broth: Mousse & Shreds with chicken, duck and duck liver, whole foods with a chicken recipe in chicken broth and whole foods with tuna and mackerel recipe in tuna broth. Every recipe includes animal meat as ingredient # 1.
Adding protein to an older cat’s diet can help maintain weight and muscle, as well as immune system health, according to Tiki Pets.
“As cats get older, their protein needs decrease, but as they get very old, their ability to digest protein and fat is compromised, so they actually need more protein in their diet,” said Ann Hudson, vice president of marketing at Tiki Pets. “In contrast to traditional senior formulas, Tiki Cat Silver offers larger amounts of high-quality, easily digestible protein and fat and is therefore tailored to the nutritional needs of cats 11 years and older.”
Tiki Cat Silver is also low in phosphorus and added moisture to support kidney and urinary tract health. Pumpkin is included in these formulas to aid digestion, antioxidant vitamins A and E help boost the immune system and joint health, and omega fatty acids can aid immunity and mobility.
Hudson predicts that the demand for geriatric pet food products will continue to grow. According to the company citing VCA Animal Hospitals, the number of North American cats aged 10 and over has increased 15% over the past decade.
“Owners of very old cats are beginning to understand their pets’ unique nutritional needs,” concluded Hudson.
In September Tiki Cat also launched a line of Tiki Cat Baby ™ products specially developed for kittens.
