Thinking of getting a cat? Humane Society offers free adoptions

Windsor, Ontario. –

The fourth wave of the pandemic is calming down, but the third wave of kitten season is in full swing.

“We have more than a hundred cats available,” says Melanie Coulter, executive director of the Windsor / Essex County Humane Society.

To help cats find a home, the Humane Society is offering free adoptions for cats five months and older for a limited time.

“We have so many cats right now, that makes it really harder to accept surrender, we ask people to wait,” says Coulter.

Typically the kitten season starts in spring, with a second wave in summer.

“The reality is that our cats will have a third litter in the fall,” says Coulter.

The Humane Society says kittens born in their third fall litter usually have a much harder time thriving. Their mother cats are worn out from previous litters of kittens.

“These kittens tend to have more health problems because their mother cannot provide the same level of care this late in the year,” says Coulter.

The Humane Society’s Adoption Center is currently open from 2pm to 5pm daily. However, adaptable cats can also be found at the local PetSmart and Pet Valu stores.

“We act as a showroom for all cats looking for a home,” says Tasha Toulouse, deputy branch manager of PetSmart.

“We generally adopt at least a few cats every week or every other week. We try to make sure that we have a new selection of cats as soon as they are adopted. “
