South Slave area canine sled race goes forward, regardless of COVID-19

Despite COVID-19, a dog sled race was held in the South Slave region of the Northwest Territories last weekend.

As part of the Aurora Ford Classic Dog Sled Race, 14 dog teams sped from Hay River to Enterprise, a distance of about 37 kilometers.

This year, in accordance with public health restrictions, no spectators were allowed to stand at the start and finish lines.

“There’s someone down here other than the mushers, the handlers and of course the media,” said race organizer Danny Beck. If you wanted to watch the race, you had to do so in your vehicle.

Travel restrictions meant all teams were from the Northwest Territories, Beck said.

Danny Beaulieu’s team entered the game first and won the $ 2,000 award.
