SINGAPORE – When Ms. Caren Soh’s dog had tick fever last month, she only had 48 hours to look for a donor because her pet was anemic or lacked healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen.

The operations officer said two friends offered their dogs’ blood but they are not compatible.
