SENIOR LECTURER/ ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ PROFESSOR: SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Small Animal Medicine;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
  • Research and publication in scientific journals;
  • networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
  • community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; other
  • Academic self-development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer:

  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • A MMedVet-degree in Small Animal Medicine and/or equivalent specialty board certification;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in Small Animal Medicine or eligibility for registration within a reasonable period;
  • At least two full peer reviewed papers in ISI accredited scientific journals as first or senior author; other
  • Four years’ veterinary experience with three years’ experience in predominantly Small Animal Medicine.

Associate Professor:

  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • A MMedVet-degree in Small Animal Medicine and/or equivalent specialty board certification;
  • In the process of completion of a PhD;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in Small Animal Medicine or eligibility for registration within a reasonable period;
  • At least five full peer reviewed papers in ISI accredited scientific journals as senior author or co-author;
  • Five years’ relevant veterinary experience in Small Animal Medicine;
  • Evidence of participation in research and discipline forums; other
  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision.

Professor:

  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • A MMedVet-degree in Small Animal Medicine and/or equivalent specialty board certification;
  • PhD in a relevant area;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in Small Animal Medicine or eligibility for registration within a reasonable period;
  • Eight years’ veterinary experience of practicing as a Specialist in Small Animal Medicine;
  • Proven track record of excellence in research through evidence of full peer reviewed papers in ISI accredited scientific journals as senior author or co-author;
  • Participation in research and discipline forums;
  • Evidence of research excellence and international standing as a researcher; other
  • Postgraduate supervision up to doctorate level.

REQUIRED COMPETENCES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIORAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Proven knowledge and competence in Small Animal Medicine;
  • High degree of efficiency in clinical related matters;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the relevant teaching level.
  • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PhD in a reasonable period of time
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; other
  • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word processing and spreadsheet software.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Experience with relevant specialized procedures, techniques and tools, eg software;
  • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience; other
  • Exposure to research in an appropriate field.

The annual package remuneration will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
