The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has warned cat owners of an increase in deaths associated with certain foods.
Concern grew after the veterinary school reported a sudden surge in severe pancytopenia in cats after a number of cat foods were recalled.
According to RVC’s latest August 2 bulletin, 528 cats in the UK have contracted feline pancytopenia, 63.5 percent of which died.

“Unfortunately we are currently aware of over 500 affected cats. Research into an underlying cause does not suggest an association with common infectious diseases in cats, common toxins (e.g. heavy metals, estrogen), or deficiency / excess of vitamins or minerals.
“Results of the analyzes of cat food published by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and involved in the product recall have been reported to the FSA. We would like to draw your attention to a revised published FSA statement that was published on July 16.
“Our research is ongoing and we are still collecting data from practicing vets and testing food samples from affected and unaffected cats to determine the significance of these results. We have shared our findings with the FSA to assist them in their investigation into this matter. “
Pancytopenia is a very rare condition in which the number of blood cells decreases rapidly, causes serious illness, and can often be fatal.
Pet food maker Fold Hill Foods is proactively recalling many hypoallergenic cat food brands, including Applaws, AVA and Sainsbury’s, based on a suspected link to an epidemic of the potentially fatal disease.
Which? has asked cat owners to stop feeding their cats these products immediately and to return them to the nearest store for a refund.
