West Lafayette, Ind. – Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine has received the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award 2021 from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity publication in higher education. Recipient of the annual Health Professions HEED Award – a national award for US health colleges and universities that demonstrate outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion – the college, along with 50 other winners, will be featured in the December 2021 edition of INSIGHT Into. presented diversity magazine. This is the second year in a row that the college has received the HEED Award for Health Professions.
“This award is an important acknowledgment of our efforts and innovations aimed at making measurable progress as a college and healthcare profession by truly welcoming and supporting everyone,” said Willie Reed, Dean of Purdue Veterinary Medicine. “Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine is a national leader with model initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion in both academic veterinary medicine and veterinary medicine as a whole. That’s because in our college we don’t just talk about diversity, equity and inclusion, we live them, and this award reflects that reality. “
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine for the award in recognition of its diverse diversity and inclusion initiatives. The college is in the midst of its five-year strategic diversity plan, launched last year and recognized for its thoroughness and commitment to inclusive excellence. The role of PVM in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in veterinary medicine has long existed. Award-winning programs such as Vet Up !, led by Dr. Latonia Craig, Assistant Dean for Inclusive Excellence, and the newest initiative called League of VetaHumanz, led by Dr. Sandra San Miguel, Deputy Dean for Engagement, each received INSIGHT In the inspiring programs of Diversity magazine at the STEM Awards. Other programs include PVM’s new and popular virtual learning cafés, a monthly series of 50-minute critical conversations on various topics selected by the PVM community.
“PVM continues to raise the bar for diversity, equity and inclusion through its innovative programming and leadership,” said Dr. Craig. “We are very pleased that PVM has received this award for the third time. This award is further proof of our hard work and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. We are not naive to believe that this award means that we have no work to do. What we do know is that we have a supportive college community that is committed to making sure we bring our core values to life on a daily basis. This work is not easy, but we do it because we are just like that, ”explained Dr. Craig. “You can have diversity without inclusion, but at PVM we strive to create an environment that welcomes and involves every student, faculty and employee. We hope that our efforts inspire others to get involved in this work in the best possible way. “
“The HEED Award process for the healthcare professions consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes student and employee recruitment and retention questions – and best practices for both -, ongoing leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of diversity and inclusion on campus. ”said Lenore Pearlstein, editor of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We go through a detailed process of reviewing each application to determine who will be named the HEED Healthcare Professions Awardee. Our standards are high and we are looking for schools that incorporate diversity and inclusion into the daily work on their campus. “
