As Oklahoma heats up, the sun comes out, and the rain subsides, blue-green algae can appear on ponds and lakes. One dog owner now has a warning for others after claiming her pup got sick from the Edmond Dog Park pond. The City of Edmond has locked the gate to the pond until officials can find out if it is safe for dogs to get back into the water. “We’ve never taken him to a pond before so we thought he’d enjoy it,” said Elizabeth Wright. Wright said that a fun trip to Edmond Dog Park Pond this weekend has turned into a nightmare situation. “I’m really scared he’s going to die,” she said. Wright shared a picture of her 3 year old German Shepherd, Sarge, playing and drinking from the water. Everything seemed fine until they got home. “We’d been home about an hour. He leaned to the side a little and started to limp,” Wright said. Sarge’s health quickly deteriorated. He began to vomit and soon couldn’t stand. Wright quickly took him to the emergency vet. “My dog is a perfectly healthy three-year-old German Shepherd. He has no medical history, no medical problems. Now he’s in intensive care,” she said. Wright contacted the City of Edmond and officials decided to close the pond at the dog park and test the water. “We’re not sure what’s going on, but we’re going to keep it closed and tested indefinitely,” Casey Moore said with the City of Edmond. The same pond had to close in 2019 and 2020 after blue-green algae were found in the water, which are toxic to dogs. However, blue-green algae usually don’t appear until later in the summer. “You don’t usually see that until it’s hot and dry,” said Moore. City officials said the tests should come back soon. You will then decide what to do from there. Wright hopes other dogs don’t get as sick as Sarge. “I just sat at home and cried. He’s like family. Your dog is like family, ”said Wright.
