Many people who adopt animals consider them family and would do anything to protect them from harm. Unfortunately, there are also many people who see animals as accessories rather than beings that live, breathe and feel things. This results in people putting their pet’s appearance before that pet’s needs, which can lead to unnecessary pain, suffering, and discomfort.
In 2017, Ukrainian fitness model Elena Ivanickaya had her Sphynx cat tattooed to make her cat as “glamorous” as she is. Supporters, animal rights groups and affected persons spoke out against Ivanickaya’s actions and called it “torture”.
The model defended her decision to tattoo her apparently stunned cat, claiming that he was in no pain and had a great life. She explained, “I checked with the vet before I got him a tattoo and they agreed and a vet was present while they got the tattoo so everything was under control.” She also told her critics: “The cat’s life is better than yours. Maybe it’s hell for you, but he’s fine. “
Despite public outrage, the model still has her Instagram account and an account for her cat. She continues to post photos of her cat with the large Anubis tattoo on his chest. These photos have the potential to normalize their actions and even encourage others to do the same to their pets. Aesthetics should never take precedence over an animal’s wellbeing and comfort. In addition, animals cannot consent to these unnecessary changes to their natural state.
