Officer Clarence, a valued member of the K9 First Responders team and the Greenland Police Department in New Hampshire, traveled to Capitol Hill with his colleagues this week. His team was there to provide mental health to police officers attending services for the murdered Capitol cop William ‘Billy’ Evans. However, Officer Clarence was fortunate enough to be petted and kissed by President Joe Biden.

Officer Clarence is a 9-year-old Saint Bernard who works as a comfort dog for the Greenland Police. He is indeed the first police comfort dog in the country. William Gordon, the deputy chief of the Greenland Police, was invited to the Capitol this week with Officer Clarence and other comfort dogs, where the dog team was helping officers with mental health and comfort. In the midst of it all, Officer Clarence managed to meet the President and he received a kiss on the nose from him, according to the recorder.

Why was Officer Clarence in the capital?

Capitol cop William ‘Billy’ Evans was an 18-year-old veteran who was killed on April 2. After 25-year-old suspect Noah Green slammed his car into the north barricade of the Capitol complex, he hit Evans and another officer before crashing the vehicle. Green was shot dead on the spot by another officer and later died. The service for Evans took place at the Capitol this week, so the K9 responders, also known as the Comfort Dogs, were invited to support the police officers traumatized and saddened by the tragic death of their colleague.

“We are touring the country wherever we are supposed to go. This time we were asked to help out during the Capitol service,” said Gordon. His team of comfort dogs has helped tragic events like the 2013 marathon bombing of Boston, the Connecticut Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, and the Las Vegas mass shooting. The comfort dogs have also assisted local residents after fires, accidents or other tragic incidents.

Gordon added at the Capitol, “Clarence was able to comfort members of Congress, the officer’s wife and two children, and our President.” He added, “They were pleased to see Clarence. When the President followed, he came to Clarence, stroked his cheeks and forehead, then kissed his muzzle. He thanked me and shook my hand and walked away.”

Biden is known to be an avid dog lover as he has two dogs himself – Major and Champ – both are German Shepherds.

“He’s a sweetheart and a local celebrity”

Officer Clarence soon became a social media celebrity after the news surfaced that he received a kiss from the president.
