Chelsea Maher is the student engagement consultant here at Becton Regional High School. Working at the Studierendenwerk enables her to discuss issues such as mental health directly with the student body. Your goal is to teach students the importance of prioritizing self-care from a young age. Maher began her trip to Becton last year as a volunteer to support and promote mental health awareness and help students with their obstacles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Maher says: “Becton is a place that cares about the well-being of its students.” Because Maher pursues the same goal, it is easier for her to immerse herself in her roles here at Becton. For Maher, it’s definitely “about the children”. Additionally, Maher had also taken on her previous role last year beyond expectations by reinstating the peer mentoring program at Becton. This program enabled the senior high school students to participate in bonding activities with the junior high school students so that they could familiarize them with our school community. “The first step is always to create a comfortable environment in which the students feel comfortable,” says Maher. All of this experience has enabled Maher to advance her title and responsibilities at Becton in the new school year 2021-2022.
As Student Engagement Counselor, Maher manages student attendance, screened students and their families, promotes mental health awareness, increases student engagement, and promotes an overall positive school environment. This position was only created for Maher, as she devoted so painstakingly to our school. With the transition from voluntary service to a permanent member of the Becton family, she describes: “Everyone here was so warm from the beginning that I felt part of the team.” She feels particularly welcomed by Ms. Sass, who says: “It is clear that Ms. Maher is really passionate about her responsibilities here at Becton. She is a conscientious advisor who always does everything she can to get in touch with the students, and she really cares about the life of the students outside of the classroom. ”Ms. Polmann can also attest Maher’s reliability in the position:“ Ms. Maher is always someone you can count on. If you ever need an answer and a solution, it has it. She was really a unifying front for Becton. ”As you can see, Maher is a valuable addition to Becton’s employees, especially in their specific area.
Outside of Becton, Maher graduated from the County College of Morris and Caldwell University to get the higher education she carries in her back pocket. Maher has an associate degree in liberal arts, a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and a master’s in counseling specializing in school counseling. To complement her impressive résumé, she completed a post-master licensing program to become a licensed psychological counselor. In addition, Maher’s dissertation was awarded the title “Pass with Distinction” and was used as a model among her specialist colleagues, which she takes up with tremendous pride. Maher has brought all of her professional and personal skills to Becton to mentor our students, which has already proven rewarding!
