A publication entitled “The Overlooked Benefits of Hydrogen Producing Bacteria. -Super Beneficial Bacteria-” filed by MiZ Company Limited (MiZ Co., Ltd.) and co-authored by University of California, Berkeley, and Keio University, was incorporated into Medical Gas Research (STM Publishing Group Ltd.) on August 30, 2021. In addition, on 4th July 2021 (“Molecular hydrogen as a novel protective agent against presymptomatic diseases”, International Journal of Molecular Science). In order to live long and healthy lives, chronic inflammation, the cause of all diseases, needs to be combated. The persistent state of chronic inflammation is called “mibyou” in oriental medicine, but modern medicine has no way of curing mibyou. MiZ Co., Ltd. recently discovered a method to suppress this chronic inflammation and published a comprehensive review. The viewpoints of the reviews and other publications by MiZ Co., Ltd. are as follows.
Super useful bacteria
While gut bacteria can be divided into “beneficial bacteria” and “harmful bacteria”, it is difficult to clearly explain the mechanisms by which “beneficial bacteria” provide benefits to human health. This problem can be addressed by focusing on hydrogen produced by hydrogen-producing bacteria in the gut. Since the concentration of hydrogen in exhaled air is high in Japanese centenarians, it is believed that hydrogen produced by hydrogen-producing bacteria contributes to their longevity. In addition, patients with Parkinson’s and dementia have a low percentage of hydrogen-producing bacteria, Bacteroides, which suggests that hydrogen protects the brain. Hydrogen can contribute to the longevity of naked mole rats because the gut bacteria of the animal Calico LLC is studying are dominated by hydrogen-producing bacteria.

Pushing the boundaries of modern medicine
Modern medicine is rushing to develop a single drug or treatment for a single disease. MiZ Co., Ltd. would like to argue loudly that modern medicine, which is based on such “elementary reductionism”, has reached its limits. The causes of Parkinson’s, cancer, and mental disorders, including dementia, that modern medicine cannot alleviate, can be traced back to hydroxyl radicals (-OH), which are formed in the mitochondria. MiZ Co., Ltd. discovered a molecule that converts hydroxyl radicals (-OH), the causative agent of all stubborn diseases, into water molecules (H2O) in the mitochondria, where they are created. This molecule is molecular hydrogen (H2).

Overcoming chronic inflammation and presymptomatic diseases
Mibyou, or presymptomatic illness, is a condition in which a disease develops slowly in the body, but the symptoms are not visible. In modern medicine, a typical example of an undiagnosed disease is an inflammatory disease caused by chronic inflammation. Since chronic inflammation is implicated in many diseases, it is not an exaggeration to say that “chronic inflammation is the root of all diseases”. Modern medicine can control acute inflammatory diseases, but chronic inflammatory diseases cannot. Molecular hydrogen (H2) has been shown to be effective in treating chronic inflammation by removing hydroxyl radicals (-OH), a reactive oxygen species found in mitochondria. Although modern medicine cannot recognize or treat “Mibyou”, H2 can inhibit the pathogenesis of untreated diseases and is therefore expected as a new protective agent.

The safety of hydrogen
Hydrogen does not have any of the side effects of drugs, but one just needs to be aware of its explosiveness. Although the use of explosive materials in hospitals and homes is dangerous, MiZ Co., Ltd. discovered that hydrogen does not explode if the concentration is less than 10%. Although there are hydrogen gas inhalers with explosive concentrations on the market, such potentially explosive hydrogen gas inhalers should be withdrawn from the market.

Challenges for Neurological Diseases
Parkinson’s disease is also caused by hydroxyl radicals that are formed in the mitochondria. Parkinson’s disease is particularly problematic because the substantia nigra of the midbrain, the focus of Parkinson’s disease, is in the center of the brain. Because of the blood-brain barrier and the invasive nature of stem cell transplantation, it is difficult to get drugs to the center of the brain. Molecular hydrogen solves all of these problems. The neurotransmitter dopamine is produced in the substantia nigra of the midbrain, but in the midbrain of Parkinson’s patients, iron ions that catalyze hydroxyl radicals accumulate in the substantia nigra, and the hydroxyl radicals produced by the Fenton reaction destroy dopamine. Due to its excellent diffusibility, molecular hydrogen quickly reaches the substantia nigra and converts the hydroxyl radicals generated there into water molecules. Metabolites of drugs that have served their roles as drugs require drug design to remove them from the brain, but molecular hydrogen does not. In the case of molecular hydrogen, however, this is not necessary, since excess hydrogen is naturally released by diffusion and the metabolic products of hydrogen and hydroxyl radicals are water molecules. There are many famous people, such as movie actors, who have Parkinson’s disease and hydrogen could help them.

About MiZ Company Limited (MiZ Co., Ltd.)
MiZ Co., Ltd. has been operating for 30 years. Research and Development in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, on possibilities for the basic treatment of diseases caused by chronic inflammation under the topic “Healthy Longevity”. In April 2021, MiZ Inc. was founded as a new location in Silicon Valley. MiZ Co., Ltd. focused on molecular hydrogen as a molecule that has the potential to cure diseases caused by chronic inflammation. Primitive life on ancient earth was primarily born from hydrogen and used hydrogen as a source of energy. The chemical structure of molecular hydrogen is the simplest diatomic molecule, but MiZ Co., Ltd. discovered that this simplicity can be a substance that can break the conventional wisdom of modern medicine.
