Meghan, who had just become engaged to Prince Harry at the time, bought the Queen a singing hamster.
The 95-year-old monarch is said to have said, “It can keep my dogs company.”
The Queen currently has three dogs, two corgis and one dorgi.
The dorgi named Candy is their oldest dog, which is believed to be at least 10 years old.
The queen herself is credited with creating the dorgi, which is a cross between the corgi and the dachshund.
Her Majesty will enjoy a “new normal” Christmas this year, possibly even making public appearances for the first time since early fall after being given the go-ahead by her doctors.
At the beginning of this year, the 95-year-old monarch either rested or only took on “light” desk tasks after a health problem.
COVID-19 restrictions ensured last year’s Christmas celebrations were kept away from the Queen’s Norfolk estate.

According to the biography Finding Freedom, she nailed his present, which was a spoon with the words “Cereal Killer” on it.
The authors wrote: “Meghan’s biggest challenge was finding the perfect novelties to amuse her new extended family.
“At least one of their gifts was a huge hit – a spoon for William with ‘Muesli Liqueur’ stamped on the flat end of the bowl.”
