Why retirees may want to look beyond traditional income strategies
Interest rates have dropped to near zero, bond yields have fallen significantly from pre-COVID levels, and a number of traditional dividend stocks have cut or postponed payments due to the pandemic. This compounding effect, combined with rising inflation, has created an environment in which real returns (nominal interest rate minus inflation) as measured by 10-year US Treasuries have been at their lowest level since the 1970s. The current inflationary environment is not ideal for high yield investors – particularly retirees – to say the least.
