There is a bookstore in Mankato, Minnesota that appears to have a resident cat to keep you company while you shop. The bookstore this cat calls home is called the Once Read Second Hand Bookstore and Exchange.

I don’t remember where I originally heard or saw that there was a cat living in this bookstore, but I Googled a little and found a post by Mankato Life about this bookstore that mentioned the cat.

According to Mankato Life, the bookstore’s cat is called Fred the Shop Cat (or Fred for short). It sounds like he’s just hanging out and walking over to you when he decides he wants a scratch. There are also pictures of a cat at the bottom of the page on the Once Read website, so maybe this is Fred! Or maybe a cat that was there before Fred.

Fun fact about the bookstore in general, the building that Once Read occupies was built in 1870, according to their website. The building passed through many tenants, but Mark, the owner of Once Read, opened the thrift bookstore in 1975. So the building has not only existed for a long time, but has become an integral part of the city.

If you are thinking of stopping by, Once Read has all kinds of books. It depends, of course, on what people are selling to the bookstore. They buy books that you no longer want, then turn them over and sell them. So who knows, a book you’ve been looking for came up on Once Read!
