Updated: 05:43 CDT 09/17/2021
Mike Mitchell and his dog Chance did it. The Alaskan couple have taken enough steps together to get around the world. “I love to run and Chance loves to run,” Mike Mitchell told KTUU. “We’re two peas in a pod, except that he doesn’t clean the house, I’ll do that.” Every day Mitchell and Chance go for a walk, and in eight years they have covered more than 24,901 miles, which is the circumference of the earth. “Somehow we managed to go the distance around the planet,” said Mitchell. “I think it’s remarkable that my little dog can run around the planet.” 68-year-old Mitchell said that some mornings he and Chance walk up to 10-12 miles, “and then come back, have something to eat, and then maybe a force nap. “The couple have covered an average of 3,000 miles a year since Mitchell began tracking their walks in 2013.” Something wonderful has happened to my connection with a small dog, “said Mitchell.” I appreciate him very, to be a great teacher and to save my bacon in a way. “On his sixth birthday, Mitchell remembers finding a litter of puppies online.” He was the prettiest and I was the first person there. I said I’ll take him with me. And that’s it, “said Mitchell.” It was all so simple, as if something had been ordered by some invisible force. I quickly decided that I had to try again. It was just the perfect name for this little dog. He’s the second chance. “Before adopting Chace, Mitchell said he was overweight and faced with several health problems.” As a young man, I had an operation and developed hepatitis C. I carried inside me for a long time and most people have it didn’t make it, but I was lucky, “he said.” It was a trip I wouldn’t wish for anyone. “Mitchell credits Chance for the motivation he needed.” When you get to the top of a mountain, you have two options going down to the next valley or the next mountain top and I think the view of the next mountain top looks good, “he said.
