In the military and working dog community, March 13th is K9 Veteran’s Day. An owner of a dog day care center in Leelanau wanted to show her appreciation for retired military dogs.

Allison Merrill, owner of the SunDog Boarding Kennel, has shipped over 100 care packages called Honor Boxes to former K9 working dogs across the country.

“Dogs are my love of my life,” said Merrill. “That’s what my whole world and my everyday life is about.”

Merrill sends their grooming packages through the Military Working Dog Team Support Association (MWDTSA), a volunteer organization that supports K9 working dogs.

MWDTSA sends out 200 care packages quarterly to current military working dogs overseas. Merrill has served on MWDTSA’s board of directors for seven years and was inspired by these care packages to ship their own.

The boxes of honor contain toys, treats, blankets and food supplements for older dogs.

“The Honor Boxes are special because these dogs have dedicated their entire lives to service,” said Merrill. “To be able to pamper and honor them for K9 Veterans Day is easy – it’s overwhelming, but it’s great.”

Merrill is already working on their 2022 boxes. If you would like to donate, you can go to your Amazon wish list here.
