Global group working on antimicrobial resistance
An international group of government, academic and business leaders plans to encourage national and regional governments to establish rules for the use of antimicrobial drugs.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization have established the One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance to raise awareness of the risk of antibiotic resistance and take unified measures to maintain the effectiveness of antimicrobials Medicinal products. A WHO announcement said that antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest health challenges in the world and is increasing mainly due to the abuse and overuse of antibiotics in humans, animals and agriculture.
Two prime ministers lead the group: Sheikh Hasina from Bangladesh and Mia Amor Mottley from Barbados. The remainder of the group consists of 19 full members, three alternate members and three representatives from the tripartite FAO, OIE and WHO.
AVMA offers resources for Pet Dental Health Month 2021
AVMA has developed a number of resources for National Pet Dental Health Month in February that are also available year-round for promoting dental health in cats and dogs.
For pet owners, the resources at avma.org/petdental include an overview of pet dental health, including information on the use of anesthesia during veterinary dentistry, periodontal disease videos and toothbrushes, and a pet dental health quiz.
Also available is a link to a pet dental health veterinary toolkit available only to AVMA members. The toolkit starts with clinical materials such as a flyer, handout and brochure. Promotional and marketing resources are headed Stress-Free Ways to Celebrate National Pet Dental Health Month, as well as promotional and marketing ideas, promotional materials, and discussion points for media interviews.
The Veterinary Toolkit also offers posts and images to share on social media, and healthy pet partner content for Facebook, Twitter and websites.
Zoetis publishes sustainability report
Zoetis recently published its Environmental, Social and Governance Report (PDF) for 2019, which includes information on energy, waste and workforce metrics. The company says it is the first in the animal health industry to disclose stand-alone performance indicators based on the work of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the Climate Financial Disclosure Task Force that provide widely used global sustainability frameworks.
“As a company that focuses on animal health, sustainability has always been an integral part of what we do. However, this year we formalized our strategy and made sustainability one of our top priorities, ”said Kristin Peck, CEO of Zoetis, in a press release.
Among the statements the company intends to provide in order to create an inclusive, safe and committed workplace is to increase the representation of women at the director level and above from 32% to 40% by 2025. In the area of environmental sustainability, since 2017 Zoetis has increased the recycling rate for hazardous waste by 35% and for solid waste by 14%. In terms of veterinary and community support, the company donated over $ 500,000 worth of products to help local veterinarians care for animals affected by natural disasters in 2019, including floods and hurricanes.
