GekkoVet Oy: Has My Dog Got Corona Virus Disease, Cholangitis or Kennel Cough? | News

HELSINKI – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Jan. June 2021–

There are hundreds of different diseases and even more symptoms that can affect pets. Even a veterinarian cannot remember all of them without help. The new GekkoCompass application, recently launched by a Finnish company, suggests the most likely diagnosis and appropriate treatment to the veterinarian at the push of a button.

When treating their patients, veterinarians use a variety of sources to make a diagnosis. Stacks of books or confusing notes are no longer necessary. GekkoCompass creates a list of possible diagnoses in probability order based on the patient’s symptoms, laboratory results and other findings. After the diagnosis is selected, the appropriate treatments will be suggested to the veterinarian. GekkoCompass supports the entire treatment chain for the patient and reduces the risk of human error in all phases. It does not forget anything and prejudice will not affect the proposed diagnoses.

GekkoCompass currently contains information on internal diseases in dogs and cats. There are almost 25,000 different disease-symptom combinations in these alone. The content is expanded to include new animal species and various areas of veterinary medicine. All this information is available to all veterinarians worldwide – regardless of veterinary training or the resources of the country.

Johanna Majamaa, CEO of GekkoVet Oy, explains: “The main idea behind the development of this application was the desire to promote animal welfare worldwide. With GekkoCompass the veterinarian can find diagnoses and recommended treatments faster and more safely. At the same time, information is collected as veterinary real-world data (RWD). For the first time, this data is automatically structured along the patient’s treatment path. PetCompass, a sister product we just launched, was born from the same idea but is intended for pet owners. We thought, why not provide animal owners with professional information and facilitate the flow of information between owners and veterinarians? “

Historically, pet owners have had to search for pet health information from various sources, the reliability of which varies widely. Up-to-date information on the animal’s condition is now easily available in one place via the PetCompass mobile app.

GekkoVet Oy works with If P&C Insurance, which offers its dog and cat insurance customers the premium version of the PetCompass application for 3 months free of charge. “During the corona pandemic, the number of new pet owners grew significantly. Above all, we want to help less experienced dog and cat owners by providing them with security in the various everyday situations they and their pets find themselves in. It is a reliable and effortless way to discover the root cause of a pet’s symptoms and to easily contact a veterinarian (or a remote veterinarian) if necessary, ”says Heidi Elomaa, veterinarian at If and product manager for animal insurance.
