The Plainville Fire Department said the dog broke away from its owner to chase geese in the middle of the river in Lysander, but then got stuck on the ice.

The dog’s leash got caught on the ice about 27 meters from land, the department said in a Facebook post.

Both local sheriff’s deputies and firefighters came to the rescue with a fire crew breaking out ice rescue equipment from the Jordanian Fire Department to rescue the animal.

The firefighters, dressed in ice rescue suits, crawled out onto the ice on their stomachs to unleash the small gray and white dog before bringing the dog back to shore.
