A drunk cat owner stabbed their pet up to ten times before placing them in a freezer with ready-made meals.

Suzanne Bennett, 48, stabbed the black and white moggy named Poppy after drinking three bottles of white wine.

She then tossed the critically ill pet into the kitchen utensil next to her frozen ready meals before calling the police for a confession.

The officers arrived at Bennett’s home in Radcliffe to hear the desperate cat meow from the freezer and found that she had sustained stab wounds to her leg and neck.

She was later treated by a veterinarian and miraculously recovered. She is now in the care of the RSPCA.

At Wigan Magistrates Court, Bennett, who has two other cats, admitted causing unnecessary suffering and was spared from jail.

She was ordered to complete an 18-month community arrangement after JPs were told that she had severe mental health problems.

Bennett told the hearing that she carried out the attack because she had an “angelic side and a satanic side.”

She said, “I had three cats for ten years, ten, nine and eight. I’ve had them since they were eight weeks old.

“I treated them like they were my children. I took care of them before taking care of myself.

“By the way, I don’t know how many times I stabbed her.”

Bennett was also ordered to complete a nine month alcohol treatment requirement, fined £ 100 and asked to pay £ 300 in veterinary bills and £ 95 in expenses.

She was banned from keeping animals for five years.

Anna McDonald, prosecutor, told the court that a veterinarian found the cat had been stabbed “multiple times” and had wounds “from a millimeter to a four centimeter puncture.”

She added, “According to the vet, Poppy was suffering from chronic pain from her wounds.

“The vet also said the cat had suffered mentally from the injuries and being locked in the freezer.”

Bennett later told police she was depressed and had “heard voices in her head” for the past decade.

Ms. McDonald added, “She said on the night in question that she had three bottles of wine and went into the kitchen at 3 a.m., picked up a knife, and then stabbed the cat.

“She then followed him upstairs and stabbed it again before watching TV and then stabbing it again.

“She said she turned the freezer on high because she wanted to end the cat’s life.

“She said she had an ‘angel side’ and a ‘satanic side’ and the ‘angel side’ told her to get help.”

Bennett had no criminal record.

Her attorney, Jed Frazer, said, “This is a worrying incident for both the cat and Miss Bennett because she had three cats.”

“She had them for eight, nine, or ten years, and no one had harmed her.

“She loved these cats and described to me that she loved them as if they were her children. She says they have always been well cared for and often better fed than she is.

“The probation report states that she said in the interview that she suffered from moderate depression. It’s more than moderate. It’s pretty strict.

“She was in bed for two weeks and didn’t come out except to feed the cats. She has a severe psychological problem and doesn’t want to keep animals anymore. She is clearly very remorseful.”
