ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) – A Massachusetts family owned dog was named one of five recipients of this year’s AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence.
The winners of the awards for hardworking dogs who have greatly improved the lives of their owners and communities were selected from a pool of nearly 1,000 nominations, the organization said on Friday.
Teddy, an 8-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog owned by George, Pamela and Caleigh Brown, from Attleboro, won the Therapy Dog category. Teddy has assisted people in a variety of situations, including imprisonment after the death of a correctional officer and reassuring rescue workers after the death of a colleague.
Most recently, Teddy and George were on duty to support the US Capitol Police.
Teddy also works as a reading companion for educationally disabled children, visiting classrooms to support students and teachers, and attending adult daytime programs for developmentally disabled adults.
