The Basepaws Dental CatKit includes testing accessories and a detailed report of the pet’s oral bioassay.
Home-based, health-oriented genetic testing is more important than ever today. DNA information opens up a new world of knowledge, health, and personality for you and your patients, as well as additional bonds. Testing is simply a must for any veterinarian looking to get actionable insights into genetic disease markers and to support the health of cats everywhere through genetic research. (Illustration 1)
Basepaws’ mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of every pet. In 2018, the company launched the world’s first home cat DNA test, focused on delivering health- and breed-related actionable insights. In addition to genetic testing for racial and hereditary diseases, Basepaws has continued to improve the genomics field by studying the oral microbiome.
In 2021 Basepaws, in collaboration with Jan Bellows, DVM, DAVDC (dog and cat specialty), DABVP, launched a painless, oral smear-based dental health test for cats. The test can be performed by the animal parent at home or at the veterinary clinic and assesses a cat’s risk for periodontal disease, tooth resorption, and bad breath based on the state of the microbial makeup of the mouth. (Figure 2)
Dental disease affects 50 to 90% of cats over the age of 4 and 50% of cats suffer from tooth resorption. The Basepaws Dental Health Test for Cats is based on comparing the compositional frequency of a core set of dental disease-related microbes in a cat’s mouth with the compositional frequency of those microbes in cats known to have periodontal disease, tooth resorption and / or bad breath. In addition to periodontal disease, Basepaws dental health test results can also give an early indication of the cat’s risk of developing systemic diseases such as autoimmune disease, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular problems, and diabetes mellitus
“The cat’s mouth is the gateway to the body. The veterinarian plays a key role in keeping the cat’s teeth and gums healthy. [The Basepaws dental health test] goes far in the direction of a long and comfortable life. Including the information gleaned from knowing the oral biome helps a lot in tailoring specific grooming for each cat, “Bellows said in a prepared statement.
Early detection is a great benefit in improving outcomes for feline patients. Visual assessment of the mouth during a routine physical exam can miss 60% of Stage 1 through 3 dental disease in cats and dogs
Basepaws is revolutionizing patient health with early detection. The Basepaws Dental CatKit contains a single, sterile cheek swab with stabilizing liquid and instructions for taking samples. A detailed oral bioassay report of the patient will be available in 4 to 6 weeks describing the patient’s risk of developing severe dental disease. The report includes a detailed interpretation guide outlining the next steps using the oral prevention, evaluation and treatment algorithm. Depending on the severity of the disease and changes in diet, lifestyle, and medication, repeat tests are recommended in 3 to 6 months.
Basepaws works with veterinary professionals by bringing together the best in technology, preventive testing and veterinary care to improve cat health for early disease detection, disease intervention and treatment and personalized pet care.
