Unfortunately for many people the world is not a very peaceful or safe place. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, so much cruelty is inflicted on humans and animals. While this can be daunting and difficult to hear, petitions are a great way to use your voice forever. With your signature you are helping to help those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.
Through petitions we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive change in the world. If you’re looking for a way to help animals and people, sign 10 petitions this week including the Yulin Dog Meat Festival Cancellation, Harmful Sunscreens Ban, and the Abolition of the Death Penalty!
We want to thank you for being the change you want to see in the world and giving voice to the voiceless.
1. Cancel the Yulin Dog Meat Festival
People have been gathering for the highly controversial Yulin Dog Meat Festival every year since 2009, and despite a zoonotic pandemic, this year is no different. The festival causes the abuse and slaughter of thousands of dogs. Many of the dogs are stolen from the homes and yards of heartbroken families while others are strays caught from the streets. They are transported in appalling conditions with no water, food or freedom of movement. Many get sick and even die from the treatment they receive. The survivors are kept in tiny cages at the festival and then slaughtered for their meat. The majority of Chinese citizens and so many activists vehemently oppose this festival and the consumption of dog meat. The Chinese government must put an end to the dog meat trade, and its first step should be the cancellation of Yulin, which is due to begin on June 21. Sign this petition to beg the Chinese government to cancel the Yulin Dog Meat Festival!
2. Implement guidelines to remove wildlife sellers from Facebook
Source: WIVB4
Recently, Vanessa Rondeau, a Canadian who runs a boutique, was caught illegally selling polar bear skulls. While selling animal bones and animal preparations is not a crime in and of itself, selling protected or endangered animals like polar bears absolutely is. She has shared roughly 30 posts in the past six years that featured polar bear skulls for sale, in addition to other endangered species. Facebook hasn’t done anything in those six years and still hasn’t even deleted their shop’s page. Sign this petition to call on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to implement stricter guidelines that will drive wildlife sellers off its platform!
3. Call for an end to the exploitation of “rat children” in Pakistan
In Pakistan, some couples reportedly “donate” their firstborn child to the shrine of Shah Dola, a Sufi saint who cared for disabled children so that they can be blessed with future fertility. These children, raised by the shrine administration, are purposely intended to be handicapped with metal band helmets. Their flattened skulls not only change their appearance, but also cause intellectual disabilities. So they will have to rely on caretakers who let them beg on the street. They are effective beggars because the national belief is that if you do not give to the “rat children” your own children with disabilities will be cursed. This is illegal, but there are reports that shrine stewards are not held responsible for the exploitation of these children. Pakistan is a member of the United Nations and is therefore subject to the 1990 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Sign this petition to call on the United Nations to finally step in to investigate these reports and protect the children if this happens!
4. Ban on sunscreens that kill coral reefs and marine life!
Sun protection is very important to protect your skin; However, there are some not-so-great ingredients that some brands include in their formulas. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are two of those chemicals that can cause coral bleaching. These and other chemicals are released when people swim in the ocean and poison the reefs. When the reefs die, so does many of the marine life that uses reefs for food and shelter. The solution is simple: use reef-safe mineral sunscreens and ban toxic sunscreens. Sunscreens containing toxic chemicals have already been banned in popular tropical destinations such as Hawaii, Key West, and Mexico. Sign this petition and ask Costa Rica to pass its own ban on toxic sunscreens now!
5. Request Marjorie Taylor Greene to resign or be expelled
Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is a QAnon conspiracy-promoting, anti-insurgency, and secessionist representative who must be removed from office. She has said so many inappropriate and inflammatory things, including comparing wearing a mask to treating Jews during the Holocaust, suggested that other politicians should be killed or imprisoned for treason, said the shooting was staged in Parkland, and promoted conspiracy theories that Hillary Clinton was responsible for the murders of several people. It is time for GOP House Chairman Kevin McCarthy to insist on their resignation or to rally Republican support for the majority necessary to expel them. Sign this petition to call for Marjorie Taylor Greene to resign or to be expelled
6. Tell Congress: End the Saudi blockade of Yemen
The six-year blockade of Yemen by Saudi Arabia has led to a major humanitarian crisis. They use hunger as a weapon of war, which could result in 16 million Yemenis suffering from malnutrition and the death of 400,000 children. The US provides military equipment worth billions of dollars to Saudi Arabia every year. Sign this petition to call on Congress to act swiftly to end the Saudi blockade of Yemen.
7. Abolition of the death penalty
Since 1973, 185 death row inmates have been acquitted in the United States. The judicial system is not foolproof and therefore innocent people have been and are being killed by our so-called judicial system. The government should not have the right to murder someone, especially because of the possibility that a person could be innocent. 106 countries have banned the death penalty and many more have imposed moratoria. Biden must keep his promise and abolish the federal death penalty. They affect disproportionately colored people as well as disabled and low-income people. Sign this petition to tell President Biden to keep his promise to abolish the federal death penalty – and governors to abolish their state’s death penalty.
8. Challenge the Canadian Retail Council to deliver on its animal welfare promises
The Retail Council of Canada (RCC) is an organization dedicated to advancing the interests of retail businesses across the country, from grocery businesses to pharmaceuticals to general merchandise. In 2016, the RCC made headlines after announcing that its member companies agreed to make animal welfare a priority by phasing out gestational cages and battery cages. Those tiny cages that pigs and chickens are forced into are incredibly cruel and must be banned. However, while the RCC organizations should implement the changes by 2022 and 2025, the RCC announced in March 2021 that it would break all “previous commitments” with regard to “sow husbandry and cage-free eggs”. Now the animal welfare guidelines are simply voluntary. This is not the first time agribusiness leaders have used bait-and-switch tactics like this to appease the public while they get away with torture. Sign this petition to demand that the Retail Council of Canada show live up to its animal welfare promises! You must phase out the use of chicken battery cages and pig carrier boxes for all member companies by 2022!
9. Support Low Income Families in Cambodia during COVID
During the pandemic, the Cambodian government only made a cash payment to low-income families. Many of these families also live in “red zones” where people are at higher risk of transmitting and contracting the virus. As a result, they cannot leave home to work or get food. There have been numerous problems with the food and aid packages going to these areas, with insufficient and insufficient supplies and disproportionate amounts of food containers, regardless of the size of the family. People are starving and the Cambodian government needs to provide more support to low income families during this very difficult time. Sign this petition to call on the Cambodian government to support these people and to comply with the 1992 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights!
10. Tax the rich
ProPublica recently gained access to a significant amount of US tax information. They found that some of the wealthiest people like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Michael Bloomberg, and George Soros got away with paying $ 0 in federal income tax in a few years. The rich pay disproportionately few taxes compared to most Americans. Income inequality is a huge problem in America as many people struggle to get food, pay for health care, or pay off debts. The ultra-rich must be taxed more heavily! Sign this petition to request a change in tax laws so that the richest pay their fair share!
