Williamson County Animal Center in Franklin, TN is selected by the Jackson Galaxy Project (JGP), a signature program run by Greater Good Charities, to participate in the 2021 class of Cat Pawsitive Pro, a life-saving initiative that introduces progressive, positive reinforcement – based behavioral training and enrichment for animal shelter cats. This innovative training program, supported by the Petco Foundation, aims to increase the adoption rate of cats and empower the shelter staff and volunteers to maintain and improve the cat’s mojo.

Jackson Galaxy, star of Animal Planet’s TV show My Cat from Hell and founder of JGP, developed Cat Pawsitive Pro with a team of experts in cat behavior. The highlights of the program include:

  • Improving cats’ adoptive ability and social skills, especially for shy or anxious cats and long-term residents
  • Enrichment of everyday life for cats in animal shelters with physical and mental activity
  • Promote the bond between humans and cats
  • Teaching and empowering shelter staff and volunteers

Cats exposed to Cat Pawsitive Pro’s reward-based training methods gain confidence, experience less stress, and build connections with co-workers, volunteers, and potential adopters. The program can help a shy cat feel comfortable in front of its cage to meet an adopter, a lively cat can learn to play nice, and an open-minded cat can learn to give an endearing “high-five” to its visitors to seal an adoption contract. Cat Pawsitive Pro is the expanded version of the JGP introductory program Cat Pawsitive.

“It’s hard to believe that it has been five years since our first class of just nine properties went through our young Cat Pawsitive Pro program. In my wildest dreams, I never would have thought that in five years, 168 organizations would be part of Cat Pawsitive, Cat Pawsitive Pro, or both! That’s 168 animal shelters and rescue workers doing more than 4,700 hours of training for more than 2,650 cats and reaching over 1,600 employees and volunteers! “Said Galaxy. “It is a humble and beautiful process to witness – with each incoming class our mission becomes more crystallized, our program refined and the ripple effect grows in the entire animal welfare system in our country.”

A JGP cat behavior expert will lead the program for the shelter through April 30th. Throughout the spring, employees and volunteers from the selected animal welfare organizations and their experts will take part in weekly seminars and have direct access to the entire training team for special consultations about the cats in their care.

WCAC Director Ondrea Johnson said, “We are honored to be selected as one of the 11 Cat Pawsitive Pro Shelters in the country. This program enables us to better prepare the cats in our care for home life, and provides our staff and volunteers with the tools and training they need to change and improve cat behavior. We hope that our cats will soon be giving out high fives to potential adopters. “

Since 2016, more than 1,800 cats have been adopted during the Cat Pawsitive program semesters. Hundreds more cats have benefited from participating in the program and continuing their education on the road to adoption. To date, a total of 168 unique animal welfare organizations have participated in Cat Pawsitive programs and delivered over 31,000 training courses, with over 1,600 staff and volunteers training thousands of cats.

The Jackson Galaxy Project is a Greater Good Charities signature program designed to improve the lives of endangered cats and help those who care for them through innovative programs that train, inspire and empower workers, rescuers and adopters.

Jackson Galaxy will post highlights from the Cat Pawsitive Pro program on the Jackson Galaxy Project’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
