Salto was the meeting point of the Uruguay and Argentina Academies of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine to treat various aspects of dogs. Topics such as leishmaniasis, the incidents and attacks caused and the complexity of agricultural production were not lacking.
Representatives from MSP, Interior, INBA and agricultural producers took part in the activities developed at CENUR Regional Norte and Intendencia.
Highlighting the work of local academics Dr. Néstor Campos (medicine) and Dr. Adolfo Bortagaray (veterinary) in organizing the activities. The general coordinator of the municipality of Salto, Dr. Juan Pablo Cesio, attended the above conferences on behalf of Mayor Andrés Lima.
“We have been working on zoonoses, communicable diseases and the problem of walking dogs as the basis of this whole panorama,” said National Veterinary Academy President Dr. Alberto Sirio.
“Here we meet with those who can have a say: administration, ministries for livestock and health, the federal government, among others. A number of measures have emerged from the academy, from the presentations at the Udelar, and we need to know whether these institutions can work in this way, ”added Sirio.
On this work team, formed with support from both the National Academy of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine; the central theme is the problem of wandering dogs and their strong association with zoonoses and the problems that this situation brings with it. Traffic accidents, the attack on flocks of sheep, zoonoses, the image as a city and as a country in relation to tourism, among other things.
“Stray dogs are a problem for society and they are animals that are not in good shape. It is animals that suffer attacks, they are not cared for or well fed. In order to remedy this situation, we propose various measures and this document has been given to those who have attended this working meeting on behalf of institutions and organizations with decision-making powers, “said Sirio.
This document and the first steps for the adapted table came from the meeting. Among them are some measures to highlight, such as: training in responsible ownership, forming dog rescue teams, creating and investing in animal shelters, chipping animals, liability insurance when acquiring animals of certain breeds, among others.
After the space has been installed, it remains to continue working in this articulation of the academy / institutions associated with the theme.
